动画电影《新愚公移山》上映之际，该片编剧、迪士尼（中国）原创意总监马克•汉德勒（Marc Handler）特意写来份“推荐信”，讲述了自己参与创作的心路历程与种种幕后故事，让人深深地感受他的创作激情与友好热忱：

As a foreigner first encountering Yu Gong Yi Shan, I understood that the story reflects fundamental Chinese values of perseverance, long term planning and dedication. I thought of these as ancient values from ancient China, but then I was surprised and delighted when I realized these same values were being practiced every day by the people I was working with on the project. My Toonmax team members are all modern people; they’re funny and smart, they listen to pop music and post selfies on wechat moments. Yet as I worked with them, I saw them applying the same ancient values that the original story expressed. They didn’t rush into production, and they didn’t accept any ideas until they were well thought out and carefully researched. Before we wrote the first page of the script, our team traveled across Shaanxi and Henan to study and learn about the roots of the Yu Gong Yi Shan story. We went to the Banpo Village where we gained insights into the dawn of Chinese culture; to Xi’an and Luoyang where we got a deeper understanding of the rise of early China; and then to places like Red Flag Canal红旗渠 where we saw how those ancient values came back into play as the new China -- the China we know today -- was built, with long term vision, long term planning, long term goals, and the steadfast perseverance to reach those goals no matter how much time and effort it took.

作为一个初次接触“愚公移山”故事的外国人，我明白了这个故事反映了中国的基本价值观是坚持不懈、长远规划和奉献精神。我认为这些都是来自古代中国的古老价值观，但当我意识到这些同样的价值观每天都在被和我一起做项目的人实践时，我感到惊讶和高兴。和我一起合作的炫动团队的成员们都是很时髦的人，他们听流行音乐，在微信朋友圈发布自拍。然而当我和他们一起工作的时候，我发现他们将原故事所表达的古老价值观运用到了生活中。他们不会仓促行事，每做一件事之前都三思而行。在我们写剧本的第一页之前，我们团队穿越了陕西和河南去研究和了解愚公移山故事的根源。我们先去了半坡村，在那里我们了解了中国文化的雏形；随后到了西安和洛阳，对中国早期的崛起有了更深的了解；然后到红旗渠，在那里我们看到那些古老的价值观在新中国扮演了多么重要的角色——我们今天所知道的中国是建立在长期愿景、长期规划和长期目标之上的，是有着不管花多少时间和精力去实现这些目标的坚定毅力。

As I was observing all of this, I was also watching my own team, applying the exact same values to our project. They were carefully planning out the production in minute detail, knowing that it would take several years to complete. They created the scripts, character designs, concept art, storyboards, music, voice performance, and each and every frame of animation, until at last we had a production that we could be proud of, and that we were eager to share with the world. I have witnessed this same spirit all over China, whether it is applied to constructing a hospital, building a city, defending the nation, or creating an animated film to inspire people and touch their hearts, it’s this same spirit that consistently advances Chinese culture in positive ways.

当我意识到这一切的时候，我也发现我的炫动团队也是如此。他们将完全相同的价值观应用到我们的项目中。他们非常仔细地计划生产，知道一个电影项目要花好几年才能完成。他们创造了剧本、角色设计、概念艺术、故事板、音乐、配音，以及动画的每一个画面，直到最后我们有了一个可以引以为傲的作品，我们渴望与世界分享。我在中国各地都看到了这种精神，无论是建医院、建城市、保卫国家，还是创作一部感动人心、触动人心的动画电影，这种精神一直在积极地推动着中国文化的进步。

The ability to establish a worthwhile goal, and then keep working, making the sacrifices necessary to reach that goal, no matter how long it takes, this is something that I have come to understand and admire about the Chinese people. We have tried very hard to capture that feeling in this production of Yu Gong Yi Shan, and I hope people watching the film will be touched by that spirit.

有能力建立一个有价值的目标，然后继续工作，做出必要的牺牲来实现这个目标，不管需要多长时间，这是我对中国人民的理解和敬佩。在《新愚公移山》这部电影中，我们非常努力地捕捉这种感觉，我希望观众能够被这种精神所感动。
