New York Street Games discusses the origins of the street games that were played and shared by all children within inner city neighborhoods. The film profiles all of the games we played and loved as kids. We revisit Stickball, Boxball, Skully, Punchball, Ring-a-Levio, Jonny on a Pony, Stoopball, Over the Line, Chinese Handball and many more. The film addresses the social and cultural importance of these games and the sense of community they engendered. Communities, and the games played on the streets of those communities, were a big part of our entertainment and our physical activity. We address why this no longer seems to be the case. We also debate if technology, which has been a major contributor to today’s more sedentary forms of entertainment, is good for children’s wellbeing. New York Street Games captures a special time in American history and is a look back at all things great about New York and past generations.
