As an infant, he was placed by his mother in the care of the provincial child welfare system and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, as a foster child. At the age of 35, he began a search for more information about his family history and his biological roots. Foster Child documents this very personal journey. It is a painfully slow one marked by frequent frustrations and small, bittersweet victories, but Cardinal proceeds with the persistence of a private detective and the determination of a journalist.
