Jussi Raala loses his inheritance when his alcoholic father sells his manor, sawmill and forests to the Lumia family. Jussi works for a while to the Lumias but is embittered by the insults and leaves the country. Two decades later he returns from America after making a new fortune and starts to buy sawmill shares from their current owner Mauno Lumia, who in turn has succumbed to alcoholism.
