In light of the unprecedented economic boom that China is currently experiencing, Beijing is being completely transformed to accommodate the 2008 Olympics. The Chinese authorities are bulldozing entire districts of the old city to the ground to make room for supermarkets and deluxe international hotels. Bearing witness to a rich and tormented history, the tiny streets of the old districts, called 'hutongs', have now become prey to real estate developers. Local inhabitants tell of the unscrupulous methods used by the government to get them to leave.
