To her friends, she’s aggressive and strong, but to her mother, she’s passive and powerless. She writes to escape reality, but her mother’s objections hold her back. An award-winning author, director Djenar Maesa Ayu makes her feature debut with THEY SAY, I’M A MONKEY!, based on her own short stories. Djenar is also an actress, having appeared in Richard Oh’s THE LOST BRIEFCASE (4th HKAFF), and is the daughter of legendary Indonesian filmmaker Sjuman Djaya.
