Runningthemileraceinunderfourminuteshaslongbeenabenchmarkforthedistance.Thesignificantrunnersandracesfromtheearly1920'stothefirstsub-fourminutemileandbeyondarepresented.Intheearly1920's,FinnPaavoNurmiwasthepreeminentracer,hewhorevolutionizedthestrategytorunthedistancemosteffectively,clockingathenworldrecordtimeof4:10.4in1924.In1931,thepostNurmierasawFrenchmanJulesLadoumèguefirstbreakNurmi'slongstandingworldrecordat4:09.2,whichrekindledthepursuitofthefourminutebarrier.Racesdesignedtobreaktheworldrecordwereheld,onesuchseeingBritSidneyWoodersonbreaktherecordinaspeciallydevisedhandicappedracewithpacers.ThefourminutebarrierwasfinallybrokenbyAussieJohnLandyinaraceinFinlandin1954withatimeof3:58.
