What happens when 10 teenagers used to playing computer war games experience the stark realities of life in the front line of a world war two battle? It’s a kind of re-staging of that historic event, immortalised in the movie A Bridge Too Far. Taking part are ten teenagers who are dropped out of a plane (for real) at 10,000 feet over the fields of Arnhem. They then have to live under identical conditions to those endured by the heroic 1st Airborne Division. The imaginative project, shown over two consecutive nights, brings history to life through real-life simulations and first-hand experience. Intercut with interviews of veterans from that fateful mission and archive material from the assault itself, it’s part history programme, part worthwhile social experiment.
