Set in the 18th century. While on holiday, young Anne Marie Ehinger (Renée Björling) is made aware of the shortcomings of her fiancé but falls in love instead with his uncle Teodor (Ivan Hedqvist). In 1919, the popular swedish actor Ivan Hedqvist (Master Anton in Victor Sjöström’s “Vem Dömer”) got behind the camera to shoot his first film as a director: a beautiful evocation of Old Sweden and one of the most neglected movies of the golden age of swedish cinema. Photographed by the great master Julius Jaenzon, the film is based on a play written by Selma Lagerlöf in 1914. Years later, a young Greta Garbo rehearse one of the monologues of Lagerlöf's play for an audition for the Dramaten School. Weyler Hildebrand will direct the sound version in 1941.
